The first scientific round table of the IX International Symposium on Lipodystrophies, entitled "Natural history and update of Lipodystrophies", started at 4.30 p.m. on Thursday 21 October and was moderated by Ekaterina Sorkina, doctor of the National Medical Research Centre of Endocrinology of the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation as principal investigator and Endocrinologist.

The first of the presentations took us directly to Russia and dealt with the natural evolution of lipodystrophic syndromes in that country and a 10-year observational study developed by Ekaterina Sorkina herself.

After Dr. Sorkina's brilliant presentation, the symposium travelled to the United States with a presentation entitled: "The natural course of generalised lipodystrophy when not treated with lipodystrophy-specific approaches". The speaker was Dr. Baris Akinci, member of the AELIP expert committee and Professor of the Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism, Department of Internal Medicine and Department of Molecular Medicine, Dokuz Eylul University, Inciralti, Izmir, Turkey.
The symposium then moved on to Latin America and more specifically to Brazil where Josivam Lima, Professor of Endocrinology at the University Hospital Onofre Lopes, Natal and member of the AELIP expert committee, gave a presentation entitled "Scoliosis: Another component of the syndrome?
Finally, the symposium moved to Peru to learn about the situation of lipodystrophies in Peru. A presentation given by Nelson D. Purizaca Rosillo, Medical Geneticist, Instituto de Investigación Genómica, Igenomica, Lima, Peru.
