Successful conclusion of the VIII International Symposium on Lipodystrophies organised by AELIP

The VIII International Symposium on Lipodystrophies organised by the International Association of Relatives and Affected of Lipodystrophies, AELIP, ended successfully. 

On 29 and 30 October, the Association of Relatives and People Affected by Lipodystrophies (AELIP) held the eighth edition of the 'INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM ON LIPODYSTROPHIES' with the collaboration of, among others, the Spanish Federation for Rare Diseases (FEDER), the European Alliance of Rare Diseases Patients' Associations (EURORDIS) and the Ibero-American Alliance for Rare Diseases (ALIBER), 

This year's Symposium presented a great novelty as it was held ONLINE for the first time due to the pandemic caused by COVID-19. The Symposium counted with scientific presentations of the highest level carried out by health research professionals who have exposed the advances and updates in research in Lipodystrophies "as well as social and health resources for families and people affected. This edition also highlighted the experience with Lipodystrophies in Latin America.  

A total of 4 scientific round tables were held during the two days of the event.  Etiopathogenesis, therapeutic approaches, experiences with Lipodystrophies in LATAM and clinical epidemiology.  

On the other hand, AELIP wanted the associations of patients with lipodystrophies to have the opportunity to present the social and health resources they develop to improve the quality of life of people affected by lipodystrophies in their respective countries. For this reason, a fifth table was set up to present them. 

The meeting brought together students, health professionals, family members and people affected by Lipodystrophies at international level, with more than 650 registrations representing more than 20 countries including Peru, Argentina, Ecuador, Brazil, Colombia and Chile from Latin America and Spain, France, Portugal, Germany, United Kingdom, Italy, Russia and Greece from Europe. 

The Symposium, which had simultaneous interpretation of all the presentations in both Spanish and English, was closed on 30 October at 20h by Maria Teresa Martínez Ros. Director General of Planning, Research, Pharmacy and Citizen Care of the Autonomous Community of the Region of Murcia who stressed the importance of continuing to develop these training meetings to increase knowledge and raise awareness of these rare pathologies both to society and health professionals, families and people affected. 

The president of AELIP, Naca Eulalia Pérez de Tudela Cánovas, publicly thanked researchers, reference professionals, students, families, affected alliances and sponsors for the possibility of coming together in the same meeting and supporting Infrequent Lipodystrophies from different perspectives.
