We support and encourage research

GraficoAELIP's priority is to develop an area of action and research that will improve the quality of life of people with lipodystrophies.

In this sense, our association supports different lines of research that are being developed at the University Hospital of Santiago de Compostela, La Arrixaca University Hospital of Murcia, and La Paz Hospital in Madrid.

The centre in Spain considered the benchmark for experience in the diagnosis and treatment of rare forms of lipodystrophy is the University Clinical Hospital of Santiago de Compostela and, in particular, its Endocrinology and Nutrition Service. The Lipodystrophy Unit of this Service is directed by Prof. David Araújo-Vilar and has the professionals and equipment necessary for the clinical evaluation, molecular diagnosis, and specific treatment of this type of disorders. In addition, this Service is the only one in Spain that can provide treatment with human recombinant leptin for compassionate use.

Simultaneously with the assistance activities, Dr. Araújo directs the Thyroid and Metabolic Diseases Unit (UETeM) of the Department of Medicine of the University of Santiago de Compostela, which currently focuses its research lines on the field of lipodystrophies; in particular, on the study of the molecular basis of the Berardinelli-Seip syndrome (and especially, in the forms associated with neurodegeneration) and Family Partial Lipodystrophy, and on the search for new therapeutic strategies.
