The State Reference Centre for the Care of People with Rare Diseases and their Families (Creer) hosted the Annual ECLIP meeting and the VII International Lipodystrophy Symposium from 3 to 6 October, a series of training sessions aimed at working for and for infrequent lipodystrophies.
This meeting brought together professional researchers from more than 30 countries and 50 families from Spain, the United States, Portugal, the United Kingdom and Peru, mainly.
The meeting provided professionals in the sector with "very valuable and direct information allowing them to enrich their knowledge very quickly.
The president of the Association of Relatives and People Affected by Lipodistrophy (Aelip), Naca Eulalia Pérez de Tudela, commented that this event is unique because there is no center - public or private - that brings together this number of experts who are working and who know so first hand the causes and development of lipodistrophy. In the same vein, the doctor of the Santiago de Compostela Hospital Complex, David Araujo-Vilar, president of the scientific committee of the meeting, added that for the guild is "vital to get the response from patients as well as know their needs.
This is due to the fact that "for the first time" the 'International Lipodystrophy Symposium' -which reaches its seventh edition- coincides with the 'Annual EClip Metting 2019', a scientific conference in which health professionals showed a series of advances that are not yet public as this part of the conference was held behind closed doors, although access was allowed to all families who requested it.
Lipodystrophies are a group of diseases characterized by a loss of adipose tissue. A common characteristic is the predisposition to suffer from diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, increased triglycerides or fatty liver.
The president of AELIP and the organizing committee Naca Pérez de TUdela, wanted to emphasize that it is essential to work from the "prevention, so they published last year a guide in which several experts from around the world have participated, so that health professionals and specialists can resort to it.
In addition, the association AELIP with the collaboration of the Galician Health Service, the University of Santiago de Compostela and the unit of thyroid and metabolic diseases presented in an incomparable setting the application LIPO-DDX, in which the main connotation is "know, prevent and help in an approach to diagnosis "Many of these patients have detected lipodystrophy between 35 and 45 years of life but had symptoms from fourteen. However, it was not detected "due to the lack of training and knowledge of the health professionals who attended them. And it is that "what is not known is as if it did not exist".
In short, this international event has brought together health professionals and researchers, as well as people and families affected by lipodystrophy, giving them the opportunity to learn about the advances in research into this pathology and to meet the different researchers from around the world.
